Letter to the Editor: Is AvalonBay Really "Saving" St. Paul's?
***July 29, 2008***
CSSP responds to the Board of Trustees receipt of the Mayor's
Committee on St. Paul's report; finds AvalonBay's plan
unacceptable for the following reasons:
Virtually no public use of the historic Main Building
Additional new construction
$27 million tax break under proposed IDA Payments-in-Lieu-of-Taxes program
No lease payments for the property
Loss of parking space for special athletic events
No space for senior citizen accommodations
Suspect land appraisal
Little chance of getting broad-based support for home rule/parkland alienation legislation
CSSP suggests it's not too late to revisit the options of public restoration, threshold use or a public/private use with no added construction.
